Match Report: Final round of N.W.A.S.A.C. Summer League, Bromborough, Mersey Estuary (25 rods).
The league having already been won by Wallasey’s Phil House (who was unable to fish due to an injury), it remained to decide the placings on a fine day at this grassy derelict wharf 11 miles upriver from the mouth of the Mersey.
Eels and flounders came on the feed as the tide crept over the mud with most anglers catching in these early stages.
Some big eels were landed including one of over three pounds landed by Association president John Williams who caught steadily to win the match but the thornback ray which was part of his catch was eclipsed by a bigger specimen of hooked at range on the last cast by Welsh international Shane Russell. Shane played the fish against the rapidly ebbing tide, bringing it to the wall and despite the absence of a drop net, it was safely landed (pic).
This was an exciting end to the Summer League, the top 30 anglers will be invited to fish a special final early in 2011.
