possible pleasure bash next sunday 21 october 2012

hi... martin has asked me to see if anyone is interested in a pleasure bash next sunday only 7.30 am launch back in 1.30pm to 2pm... its 8.7m in morning and 8.6m in afternoon @ 16.09pm... low water is 10.28am,,, if the weather is fit and there are more than 2/3 boats interested what do you guys think? let me know on here or meeting tomorrow,,,,, obviously with such a big tide the weather would have to be spot on to go,, and i mean spot on,,,,,any doubt at all and i will not be attending.... have a think,, the river is fishing quite good at the moment.. might be worth a shot? thanks keith

As Keith says, the weather, as always, is the crucial factor, but with a bit of luck we might just get out.

I've fished the river several times on big tides in the past, with the anchor rope as tight as a banjo string and generally the fishing has been great. However, at the risk of "teaching your grandmother to suck eggs" (who's nan sucks eggs anyway?) the biggest problem people might have is holding ground, both their boat and fishing tackle.
- Here's my advice on what works for me - for what it's worth.

Boat.
The obvious answer is appropriate anchor for the size of boat, but equally it's crucial you have proper heavy anchor chain and enough of it, don't use lightweight galvanised chain you might pick up in B&Q. I've forgotten what the books say but from memory I think I've got about 25ft or so on my 16'6" Alaska 500 which may be a bit short according to the books but it is very heavy and works for me -it's the only exercise Tim gets! You also need plenty of rope of course to ensure the the anchor and most of the chain lie flat on the riverbed.
The best fishing tends to be...wait for it... where the fish are - and that can often be where the tide runs fastest, at the river's narrowest and deepest points. So as far as we're concerned that'll be the stretch of the river on the Liverpool side around the Clock.
If conditions do get a bit difficult here you can always head over towards the Egg Buoy on the Wirral side or, conditions permitting, out of the river where the tide is much less severe. Remember to always keep out of the shipping channels!

Tackle.
Rivers like the Mersey in these sort of tides are just what uptiding was invented for and you want to see a decent bend in your rod (4-10oz) against the tide. It wont really be a day for quiver tips, although they'll work. They'll just be bent double in the tide, and that's before you get a fish on, so maybe stick with beefier uptiders and 7000 size reels.

I always use quite heavy leads, 8oz Gemini's with fixed springy wires and again using the same principle as anchoring the boat, you've got to let out enough line to ensure the wires stick. Buy the best quality hooks you can find and change them once they lose their edge and you shouldn't miss a bite, the fish will hook themselves. I like Varivas Big Mouth hooks for cod and my fingers often testify to how sharp they are.

Downtiding with braid is also an option, but don't get carried away with too many booms (Tim). So leave the Christmas Tree at home and keep it simple.

it could be anywhere now, we dragged it to the surface with the anchor winch ronnie thought it was still part buried it was in 53 feet of water at the time it was 3/4 tide i would say about 50 yards of the wall,i think it was the lump of crap that we have lost gear on for years

right girls,,, tomorrow is ON,,,fog early am so we have to be very careful,, i want NO ONE fishing in the shipping channel under any circumstances,, if i ask you to move its because i think you are in the channel... we dont want to get banned before our winter season even starts...launch 7.30am to 8am.. channel 74 for radio check,,back on the beach for 1.30pm at the latest..., please be careful if its foggy ,, good luck and hope to see all the boats from the club out tomorrow,,,, stay safe and tight lines... keith
