| The otterspool pub, 10.00 and i'm booking on to fish the mersey pirates open. I pay my £7 entry fee and draw my peg. 4, not the best end of the venue. It was blowing a hooley right in our faces and putting my shelter up took a good 15 minuets, loads of fun! I had fresh peeler and cracking fresh black supplied by my dad and mackerel, blueys ,sandeel and squid from Joe Perry's shop I also had some frozen peeler and razor from my own freezer. I got ready and started fishing when the start horn went. Started catching from the off, mostly small codling around 8" long. 2 at a time on a standard 1 up 1 down rig with 1/0 hooks on. About an hour into the match there was a commotion about 100 yards down from where i was pegged. I saw a drop net going down and then up with somrthing heavy in it. I walked down and saw Welsh international Phil House with a cracking cod which weighed 11-12-0 , a stonking fish . At this stage i should mention that ithe format for this match was heaviest round and flat combined weight. If Phil Could get a flounder or no one else got one he would win. I went back to my rod and tried to get an insize fish. 15 minuets later i got an eel that was 45 cm , Result! now just a flounder or dab. Easier said than done on this venue! I rigged up a flatty Fanatic rod with a fixed spool and a long light rig with size2 hooks on baited with crab legs and put a light lead on. I flicked it 5 yards out and started twitching it. A bite devoped which i thought might have been another eel so i left it and started baiting up another rig. As i started to reel in i could feel a decent weight and was made up when a flounder came flying over the railing! As it stood i was winning, only another 2 and a half hours to get through! The last hour produce a flurry of whiting but no other flatties. Back at the otterspool i found i was the only angler with the required flat and round. I had won but felt gutted for Phil ( who was 2nd) He still took home £163 for his cod while i got £200 for 1st £63 for the biggest flat and a nice trophy for the mantlepiece . Made up, really enjoyed the day and this has topped off a great fishing week. Dad was at a stamp fair and Mark was working but i was still suprised i was the only Sefton SAC member there Shame really because it fished well , i reckon i had 20 plus fish mostly small but still fun. All baits worked. | |

| well done ste. thanks for the nice comment . it was a great day . and what a sole ambassador for sefton sac . a well deserved win here is my pic of phil with his stonking cod everyone had a good head of fish but getting them in size was a prob and doing the flat and round format . left it wide open if a big fish was caught . for our 1st l open it was a terrific turn out and thanks to all that attended . lets hope its even bigger next year | |
